Model Identification
The Early Years
The 1946-1951 outboards have three digit model numbers. The first two digits are the year and the last digit designates the size for the motor.

For example the 'CE' at the end of 100STLCE indicate that the engine is from '89'. If your are still unsure of your engine year, search for your model number on the Johnson 1980-later serial number year chart located here. 1969-1979 The actual year is found in the model number, not the serial number. Apr 12, 2017 The model year of a Honda outboard motor can only be determined by using the serial number through the 2006 model year. Contact a Honda Marine dealer for information on how to determine the model year of Honda outboard motors after the 2006 model year, because Honda stopped using model year designators in the serial number beginning with the 2007 model year. Prior to 1969, Johnson model numbers were year-specific; serial numbers were used in identification. Johnsons from the 1969 to 1979 era use the last two digits of the year at the end of the model number to identify the model year; for example, a Johnson model number ending in '-4RL79' was built in 1979.

At a glance, then, you can tell that a 497 is a 5 Hp twin made in 1949, a 470 is a standard single made in 1947. The only exceptions are the 1946 models, which are designated 461 and 467 for the standard and deluxe single.

Example 1-20 means the motor has a trolling speed less than 1 MPH and a top speed of 20 MPH. This was on the outboard's gas tank decal and only used in 1951-52.
1952 - 1958 Four Digit System
1952 premiered the four digit model number system. The first digit, 3, is always constant and indicates a Scott-Atwater product. The last two digits when reversed are the year the outboard was manufactured. For example: the 1952 5 Hp is a 3725. The second digit designates the size of the motor, as above for 1946 - 1951. For example: the 1952 5 Hp twin had a four digit designation of 3725. There are exceptions. They will be listed below.

Example: A 3865 model number would be a 1956 10 Hp.
Now for the exceptions:
Old Champion Outboard Motors
In 1955 (its only year) the 30 Hp had a model number 3655.
In 1956 (also its only year) the 33 Hp with a model number 3665.
In 1957 Scott-Atwater debuted a 40 Hp with a model number of 3675.
In 1956 (also its only year) the 33 Hp with a model number 3665.
In 1957 Scott-Atwater debuted a 40 Hp with a model number of 3675.
So Scott-Atwater used the 36 starting digits for the 30, 33 and 40 Hp in consecutive years.
Microsoft office 2011 for mac in torrent download. Model numbers that have a -2 suffix are for long shaft versions. Used on 5, 7 1/2, 10. On the 16 Hp -3 was electric start. -4 on the 16 Hp was electric start long shaft. 1957 model numbers for the 40 Hp ending with a -2 are long shaft, -3 electric start, -4 electric start long shaft. -5 Royal Scott, -6 Royal Scott long shaft.
In 1958, the 22 Hp debuted as model: 135 (standard shaft), 235 (long shaft), 335 (standard shaft electric start), and 435 ( electric start long shaft). Also, the 1237 is a 5 Hp long shaft, 1233 is a 7 1/2 Hp long shaft, 1238 is a 10 Hp long shaft, 1239 is a 16 Hp long shaft.
The 1958 40 Hp motors are as follows. (Super Scott) 1236 long shaft, 1336 electric start, 1436 electric start long shaft. (Royal Scott) 1536 electric start, 1636 electric start long shaft.
The 1958 60 Hp (Flying Scott) motors are the 332 electric start, 432 electric start long shaft.
The Later Years
(1959) The outboards were back to three numbers ending with the letter A. Available outboards were: 3.6, 5, 7 1/2, 10, 25, 40 and 60 Hp. In 1959 the Bail-A-Matic returned on all the outboards except for the 3.6 Hp. It was also the first year without a 16 Hp model, and the 25 Hp replaced the 22.

Caveat
The above information is as correct as I can make it. Please post a message in the forum if you have any additional information or sources to complete or enhance the above
Over the years, manufacturers have changed where this information is located on an outboard. I'll try to be as complete as possible below, while keeping this reasonably simple.
Mercury
Champion Outboard Motor History
On older Mercury outboards, going back into the 50's and possibly even earlier, the serial number would generally be viewed at the leading edge of the swivel bracket, as seen in the image below. If for any reason that number may have been changed, removed, or can no longer be read, every Mercury had a freeze plug, which is on the powerhead and about the size of a quarter. That freeze plug will have a serial number on it. So long as you know your HP and the serial number, you can identify the year of your outboard.
Champion Boat Motor Identification
On later model Mercury engines, the serial number was located on the swivel bracket, as shown in the picture below. First, these would be on a metal tag and stamped with the numbers. Later, the numbers were printed on a vinyl tag. Unfortunately, you'll often find that the vinyl tag has washed out. If you can no longer read the number on the tag, you’ll want to find that freeze plug on the powerhead in order to identify the outboard.

Johnson & Evinrude
Old Champion Boat Motors
Johnson and Evinrude outboards both work with model numbers for identification. In most cases, the model number is located on either the transom or swivel bracket. It can usually be found on a either a metal plate on earlier models or a sticker on later models. Once they switched over to the tags, this was another number that often washed out and could no longer be read. In this case, the powerhead freeze plug can be located and will have the serial number. The serial number itself won't do you much good, but an authorized dealer can use the serial number to match the engine up with a model number again.
Chrysler Outboards
Chrysler outboards work by a model number. There are 2 locations where you may find this number. Early Chrysler models stamped it on a metal plate and it was placed under the carburetors, inside the lower cowling, or pan. Later models used the same plate, but you'd find it on the side of the transom bracket.

Force outboards used model numbers on vinyl tags, many of which washed out. If the number washed out, you may find a small sticker either on the cylinder head cover or the starter bracket. If that fails, all is not lost. There are numbers stamped on your carburetor. Take those numbers and google them or email us. Those numbers will usually nail down a year and HP for your engine.

Nissan, Tohatsu, Suzuki, Yamaha, and Yamaha Mariner use both model and serial number information. That tag can almost always be found on the side of your transom bracket, as shown below.
